Thank God, I made it up to Low’s Peak and down in one piece!
Monday, October 6th, 2008Really have to thank God for bringing me safely back home after the hike up Mount Kinabalu. It was a memorable and painful experience. I can only laugh at myself for submitting to such a task.
As promised in my previous post, Kinabalu means “the revered place of the dead” or “A Chinese Widow”. When I found out about what it meant, my heart sank a bit and started to wonder if I should prepare for the worst.
We were blessed with good weather and a good guide, Mr. Mollonius Tinggal.
It’s amazing how easy it seems for him. He brought another group down the mountain the day before we started our climb up. He walked up the slopes without having to hold the ropes… when I had difficulty climbing down, he offered to carry me. I told him I’m heavy, 62kg. He said 62kg isn’t very heavy.
His son, Felix, was our porter. He is only 15 and he can run up the mountain with a bag behind him. He reached the peak at age 7!
I had a good hiking partner too… she’s Fanny Lee. She almost gave up because of black pepper allergy reaction. Nevertheless, she was strong and perservered.
Even when I was not in my best of state
she continued good spirited. Thanks for pulling me through, Fanny
